Artist Statement

I am a realist portrait painter who draws inspiration from personal experiences of racing triathlons. At these sporting events I'm surrounded by people I admire for their grit and determination, inspiring me to paint them.

On canvas, I seek to capture the more unconventional sides to sitters, which haven't typically been framed within art history and celebrate them as real people. I strive to paint the moments when individuals feel proud of themselves, helping celebrate their achievements so they can truly be appreciated.

I'm influenced by painters including Joseph Wright of Derby, for his compelling storytelling, and Colin Davidson, whose portraiture is both beautiful and emotive.

Likewise, I want people to connect with the deep emotion felt by figures, from sporting heroes to everyday people, who are immortalised in my classically-styled paintings.

About the oil painting process

Initial consultation

Painting

The process begins by discussing the specifications of the painting. This includes canvas size, any edits to the original picture, style preferences, timescale and anything else.

The painting begins. This part takes roughly two to three months although this can vary according to the image. I build up my oil paintings with many layers on a textured canvas. Once the painting is complete I get in contact to see if there's any tweaks wanted.

Varnishing

Everyone's least favourite bit is drying time which is typically six months although it can be more with thicker paintings. This part is essential as it needs to be dry before varnishing. This protects the paintings and brings out the vibrancy in the colours. Then it is ready for delivery!
